Stocking Up

My student funds have been disbursed, and you know what that means? Time to stock up on the necessary supplies for classes. First things first, every good nurse needs a good stethoscope. Here is what I’m ordering:

Littmann Cardiology III Stethoscope

It’s the Littmann Cardiology III in Raspberry! I was considering the Caribbean Blue color; but the reviews kept saying that the color was not even close to its online description. So, Raspberry it is…and I’m getting it inscribed: “Hakuna Matata” which is the Swahili phrase for “No Worries”. God knows I’ll need those words of inspiration as the nursing program gets more and more intense. I was going to use my signature phrase: “Jesus Take the Wheel!”; but only a handful of folks would get the origin of my using that phrase…it really doesn’t have much to do with the song lyrics.

The next thing on my list is a pair of comfortable shoes. I have back issues, and I’m trying to avoid any further injuries/pain as much as possible. For years I’ve worn plain old running sneakers, and by the end of a shift, my back is not my friend! I’ve always had a slight apprehension toward “nurse shoes”, I mean, they’re not the most fashionable pieces. So if I’m gonna get some, they should offer a great deal of comfort to offset the unsightliness! School gives the option of black or white shoes. I’m going with black.

Lastly, I’m nearing the end of my gadget debate. I’m about 90% sure that I’m getting the ipad 2. It seems to be a great tool for school. I can potentially load all of my books onto it using ebooks, and Pages will allow me to create documents. The only catch is that Apple is still at arms with the Flash people; so, that may be a little tricky. The good thing is I still have my standard Sony laptop to use. The little cutie Sony netbook is getting re-homed. It will be a sad moment; but its new owners will give it a loving home.

The end of an Era

I have been a ball of nerves and bitchiness the last couple of months. I was waiting to hear from two nursing schools. Everyday the anxiety would build and build, until the moment the mailbox would make its sound. Each time, I would run and check, and up until yesterday it was goose egg city. But yesterday. Yesterday!!! It came, the sign, the message, the oh-so coveted letter! I got it, I got it, I GOT!!!

I honestly wasn’t expecting to get accepted. I figured I would, at best, be waitlisted. I mean, everyone had been fretting and talking, and to hear other people fret, and compare GPA’s and TEAS test scores…I started to doubt myself. I have a funny habit of second-guessing my intelligence and hard work. This acceptance letter is a testament to how hard I have worked. Nursing school is super competitive, no matter what type of school- 4 year, 2 year, diploma program- it is cut throat. I got in; and that is awesome!!!

My adventure begins in January 2012. I’m excited and even more anxious! My first concern is what are our clinical uniforms going to look like? I mean, I need to know what color we’re wearing and I hope to God we are not wearing scrub pants with tapered legs.

Believe it or not, I had to endure this style of scrub pant, in royal blue, for 3 years! The animal hospital that currently employs me required them. There was a huge to-do when the techs voiced their opinions about how our scrubs looked dated and it was time to update. The practice owner’s wife chose those ugly scrubs! After much heated discussions and several tears, she caved and we won! I hope to never wear that style of scrub pant EVER!!

Here are a few other concerns of mine-
